1 John 2:6 Note As
that one walked Jesus is the example Christians are to follow—it is the
Christian’s obligation to live as Jesus lived.
There should be no contest over this truth from any of us who are truly born
again. As 1 John 3:3 says, “Every man that hath this hope in him purifieth
himself, even as He is pure.” Jesus is our example, and all of us Christians
(the word means “little Christ”) should act just like Jesus as much as
possible. We will never do that perfectly, but that should be the direction
we are headed. We won’t arrive in this life, but we can at least leave and
head in that direction.
Notes For Verse 6
a [He that says he abides in Him ought himself also so to walk, even as He
walked] Every one who makes a Christian profession ought to walk as Christ
did (1Jn. 2:6; 3:1-10; 4:17; 1Pet. 2:21). To be in Christ means that one is
a new creature and that affections and lusts of the flesh have been
crucified (2Cor. 5:17; Gal. 5:16-26; Rom. 8:12-13; Col. 3:5-10).
b [abide in Him ought himself also so to walk, even as He walked] Ten
proofs of abiding in Christ:
1. Walking as Christ walked (1Jn. 2:6)
2. Love of the brethren (1Jn. 2:10; 3:14-15)
3. God's Word abiding within (1Jn. 2:14)
4. Doing the will of God (1Jn. 2:17)
5. Permission of individual (1Jn. 2:24-25)
6. Continued anointing (1Jn. 2:27)
7. Freedom from sin (1Jn. 3:6)
8. Keeping commandments (1Jn. 3:24; Jn. 15:10)
9. Indwelling Spirit (1Jn. 3:24)
10. Fruit bearing (Jn. 15:4,7)
