James 4:8 Note

Of course, God is everywhere and, specifically, with and inside every believer (Matthew 28:20 and Hebrews 13:5).

This isn’t speaking of getting closer to the Lord in distance; this is speaking of intimacy, or relationship.

We can know God more and better (Philippians 3:10).

How do we know God better?

This verse goes on to answer that question.

We cleanse our hands (actions) and purify our hearts. In other words, we quit submitting to the devil and submit to God instead.

As we walk with Him, we get closer. As we walk with the devil, we get farther and farther away from God.

Notice that double-mindedness is in our hearts.

This speaks to the fact that our hearts are a combination of the soul and spirit. (Matthew 12:34.)
