 Jeremiah 1:6

 Was it an excuse?
A youth, his objection is that he is not yet a man according to ancient Israelite standards; he is still under 20, quite likely 12–16 years old at the time of his calling. Jeremiahfs protestation that he does not know how to speak parallels Mosesf objection in Exod 3:10.

His distinction as a boy is similar to Samuelfs call in 1 Sam 3:1–14.

Then I said, gAh, Lord God! Behold, I do not know how to speak, for I am only a youth.h

Jeremiah 1:7
But the Lord said to me, gDo not say, eI am only a youthf; (no excuse) for to all to whom I send you, you shall go, and whatever I command you, you shall speak.

 

  Jeremiah 1:7 You will go. The instruction by God presents Jeremiah as a royal envoy: He is commissioned to relay Godfs decrees to whomever He designates.

You will speak the expression forms a parallel with the ideal prophet like Moses in Deut 18:18. Jeremiahfs calling is a fulfillment of this divinely appointed office.

In ourselves, we are a child and unable to do anything. But we are not in ourselves. We are in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17), and we are not coming out. There are many times this scripture is referred to. We should be saying; I will go to all that He sends me, and I will speak His Word with power and signs following (Mark 16:20).

 The Lord touches us at salvation in Jesus. When we share God's word it's His word in our mouth. We should never be afraid to share God's word.

 Jeremiah 1:12 am watching. The Hebrew term shoqed, which is often translated as gwatching,h forms a play on words with the almond tree, shaqed (Jer 1:11).
My word to perform it The first oracle in vv. 5–10. It has been spoken, but its fulfillment lies in the future.

And when they had taken him, they brought him up to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, at Riblah, in the land of Hamath; and he passed sentence on him.

This has got to make you want to speak God's word

 

  Speak God's word, speak God's fire. Every born again believer has God's fire in our mouth when we speak His word. Thus the word: It is written Matthew 4:4

  Jeremiah was a faithful messenger for the Lord despite tremendous persecution. How did he do it? The foundation of his faith and faithfulness was Godfs Word. Godfs Word was the joy and the rejoicing of his heart. If we will love Godfs Word more than the things of this life, we will be faithful to God and His purpose for our lives too (John 17:17).
 

Jeremiah 15:16 I ate them A poetic reference to Yahweh putting His words in Jeremiahfs mouth for him to speak. Compare Jer 1:9; Ezek 2:8–3:3.
Jubilation, even as the joy of my heart The prophetfs experience of the divine word is pleasant and positive.

 Jeremiah 15:19

and not what is worthless, you shall be as My mouth. They shall turn to you, but you shall not turn to them.

 Jeremiah had been lamenting his ministry and the pain it caused him (Jeremiah 15:16-18). The rejection was so bad that at one time, Jeremiah said he wouldnft speak out Godfs judgments anymore (Jeremiah 20:9). Here, the Lord said that if Jeremiah would turn from his complaining and return back to the message and calling the Lord had given him, then the Lord would protect him. He would have to quit listening to the complaints and criticisms of those who were coming under judgment. They could come over to his way of thinking, but he was not to go over to their way of thinking.

[Therefore thus saith the LORD ...] The 35th prophecy in Jeremiah (Jer. 15:19-21, fulfilled). Next, Jer. 16:1.

Six Predictions -- Fulfilled:

1. If you return to Me I will bring you again, and you will stand before Me (Jer. 15:19).

2. If you take forth the precious from the vile, you will be as My mouth.

3. I will make you unto this people a defensed wall (Jer. 15:20).

4. They will fight against you but they will not prevail against you.

5. I am with you and will save you and deliver you from them.

6. I will deliver you out of the hand of the wicked and out of the hand of the terrible (Jer. 15:21).

These statements were made to Jeremiah, assuring him of protection from his enemies and promising preservation through all that he was to endure for the sake of Jehovah.

b [but return not thou unto them] God finally advised the prophet to let them come to him if they wanted to hear any more truth, and told him not to return to them or force his message upon them. The Lord predicted a fight between Jeremiah and the rulers and people in which he would be like a brazen wall which they could not overcome; furthermore, He promised to save His servant from all the wicked and terrible men who were his enemies (Jer. 15:20-21).

 A person speaking the true Word of God is like a fire or a hammer that breaks into pieces all the false prophecies of the ungodly. There is an anointing on Godfs Word that no carnal word can compete with. If we will speak Godfs Word, then God will make that word fire and the people wood, and it shall devour them (Jeremiah 5:14).

[Is not my word like as a fire ... like a hammer] Two symbols of the Word of God:

1. Like a fire, a great purifier which destroys all that is false and leaves only the genuine metal.

2. Like a hammer which rouses and strengthens the life and conscience, crushing everything that is evil within the heart. See Twelve Symbols of the Word of God.

As the gfireh consumes the gchaffh (Je 23:28), so gMy wordh will consume the false prophets (Mt 3:12; Heb 4:12). gMy wordh which is gwheath (Je 23:28), that is, food to the true prophet and his hearers, is a consuming gfire,h and a crushing ghammerh (Mt 21:44) to false prophets and their followers (2 Co 2:16).

The Word of the false prophets may be known by its promising men peace in sin. gMy word,h on the contrary, burns and breaks the hard-hearted (Je 20:9). The ghammerh symbolizes destructive power (Je 50:23; Na 2:1, Margin).
