Jesus answered every temptation with “It is written,” showing His knowledge of
God’s written Word. This is remarkable, since He didn’t have a personal copy of
Scripture, but Jesus was the Word made flesh (John 1:14).

Notes For Verse 10

Notes For Verse 11

The Word of God, like rain and snow that water the earth and cause it to produce fruit, will be sown in the hearts of men and produce fruit in the moral world (Isa. 55:11; Dt. 32:2). As the rain and snow fall on various kinds of ground, so does the Word of God (Mt. 13:3-8,20-23). Like rain and snow, it will accomplish its best good in the eternal reign of the Messiah, when the knowledge of the Lord will cover the earth (Isa. 11:9). Thus, the final fulfillment of this scripture will be in the future; there is only a partial fulfillment at present in the preaching of the gospel.

a [go out with joy, and be led forth with peace: the mountains and the hills shall break forth before you into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands] Go out (or forth) from the lands of your wanderings, referring again to the final and complete regathering of Israel from all nations (Isa. 11:10-12, notes). In their regathering at the second coming of Christ, the mountains, hills, and trees of Palestine are to rejoice at their return. In that day the curse will be removed from plants and trees, and the state of all things will be as before the fall of Adam (Isa. 55:13; 35:1-10; cp. Ps. 98:8).

Just as all births come from seeds, so this birth from above comes from a seed.
But this isn’t the physical seed of a plant or the seed of a man. The seed that
produces salvation is God’s Word. And just as it would be foolish for a woman to
expect to deliver a child when she has never had the seed of a man planted in
her womb, so it is foolish to expect anyone to be saved without planting the
seed of God’s Word in their heart (Romans 10:14-17).
Notice that God’s Word is an incorruptible seed. Natural seeds sometimes rot and
don’t produce life. But God’s Word is incorruptible. It always works. We just
have to work it.
Notice also that the seed of God’s Word lives and abides forever. There is no
expiration date on its potency. The words that the Lord spoke to people
thousands of years ago are still alive and active and will produce miracles in
our lives if we mix those words with faith (Hebrews 4:2).
The English word “seed” in this verse was translated from the Greek word SPORA,
and this Greek word means “a sowing, i.e. (by implication) parentage” (Strong’s
Concordance). It is akin to the Greek word SPERMA (Vine’s Expository
Dictionary), from which we get our English word sperm (American Heritage
Dictionary). In the same way that a child cannot be produced without sperm, a
child of God cannot be produced without the incorruptible seed of God’s Word.
A man or woman without the new birth is
spiritually blind. This parallels what Paul said in 1 Corinthians 2:14, “But the
natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are
foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually
discerned.”
The Greek word ANOTHEN, which was translated “again” here, means “from above; by
analogy, from the first; by implication, anew” (Strong’s Concordance). This is
stressing a spiritual birth from above as compared to the physical birth
everyone on the earth experiences. See my note at John 3:7.

Note 2
The new birth is essential for entering into the kingdom of God (John 3:5). As
Jesus explained to Nicodemus, this is not a second physical birth but rather a
spiritual birth. Our spiritual man became dead unto (separated from) God through
sin (Romans 3:23, 6:23, 7:9, 11; Ephesians 2:1, and 5). Just as we didn’t
accomplish our physical births, we cannot produce this spiritual rebirth.
We are totally incapable of saving ourselves (Jeremiah 13:23; Romans 3:10-12,
8:7-8; and Ephesians 2:3); therefore, we need a Savior (Titus 1:4; 2:13; 3:4,
and 6). We simply believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and we are saved (Acts
16:31). Faith is the only condition (Romans 3:28 and 10:6-9). Faith alone saves;
however, saving faith is never alone.
As stated in James 2:17-18, “faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being
alone...shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my
works.” Salvation is not a reformation but rather a regeneration, a new birth, a
new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17), that can only be accomplished by a creative
miracle of the Holy Spirit (John 1:13 and 3:5).

Throughout Jesus’ earthly ministry, the Jews kept looking for Him to establish a
physical kingdom here on the earth and deliver them from the oppression of the
Romans (Daniel 7:13-14, 27; Luke 17:20; and Acts 1:6). Although at Jesus’ Second
Coming, the kingdom of God will physically rule over the nations of the earth
(Matthew 25:31-46; Revelation 11:15, and 20:4), Jesus’ kingdom is spiritually
established by His Word and not carnal weapons (2 Corinthians 10:3-5).
Jesus said, “The kingdom of God cometh not with observation...behold, the
kingdom of God is within you” (Luke 17:20-21). Paul said we are already in the
kingdom of God (Colossians 1:13). The kingdom of God is therefore Christ’s
“invisible church,” His body; it was begun during His earthly ministry and is
still ruling the hearts of people today. To be a part of His church (Romans 12:5
and Ephesians 1:22-23), you must be born again.
The New International Version (1984)
renders the first part of this verse as “Be self-controlled and alert.”
We are in a battle with an enemy; i.e., the devil.
He only comes to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10).
But notice that he can’t just devour anyone.
Like a lion, he only gets the stragglers who drop out of the herd.
The truth is, Jesus defeated the devil (Hebrews 2:14-15).
The devil is a toothless lion.
All he can do is roar.
It’s through intimidation or ignorance that Christians let the devil destroy
them.
He can’t do anything to them without their consent and cooperation.
My pastor gave a testimony about going on safari.
They were in an open vehicle and driving through the midst of lions.
But the guide assured them that the lions would not attack them because the
lions saw them as part of that vehicle as long as they stayed in it.
But he told them of a tourist who got out of the vehicle to take a picture and,
instantly, the lion tore him to pieces.
The lesson is that as long as we are “in Christ,” Satan won’t touch us.
But when we stand in our own might, we are easy prey.

1 Peter 5:8
Here the apostle does three things: -
I. He shows them their danger from an enemy more cruel and restless than even
the worst of men, whom he describes,
1. By his characters and names. (1.) He is an adversary: "That adversary of
yours; not a common adversary, but an enemy that impleads you, and litigates
against you in your grand depending cause, and aims at your very souls."
(2.) The devil, the grand accuser of all the brethren; this title is derived
from a word which signifies to strike through, or to stab. He would strike
malignity into our natures and poison into our souls. If he could have struck
these people with passion and murmuring in their sufferings, perhaps he might
have drawn them to apostasy and ruin.
(3.) He is a roaring lion, hungry, fierce, strong, and cruel, the fierce and
greedy pursuer of souls..
2. By his business: He walks about, seeking whom he may devour; his whole design
is to devour and destroy souls. To this end he is unwearied and restless in his
malicious endeavours; for he always, night and day, goes about studying and
contriving whom he may ensnare to their eternal ruin.
II. Hence he infers that it is their duty,
1. To be sober, and to govern both the outward and the inward man by the rules
of temperance, modesty, and mortification.
2. To be vigilant; not secure or careless, but rather suspicious of constant
danger from this spiritual enemy, and, under that apprehension, to be watchful
and diligent to prevent his designs and save our souls.
3. To resist him stedfast in the faith. It was the faith of these people that
Satan aimed at; if he could overturn their faith, and draw them into apostasy,
then he knew he should gain his point, and ruin their souls; therefore, to
destroy their faith, he raises bitter persecutions, and sets the grand
potentates of the world against them. This strong trial and temptation they must
resist, by being well-grounded, resolute, and stedfast in the faith: to
encourage them to this,
III. He tells them that their care was not singular, for they knew that the like
afflictions befell their brethren in all parts of the world, and that all the
people of God were their fellow-soldiers in this warfare. Learn,
1. All the great persecutions that ever were in the world were raised, spirited
up, and conducted, by the devil; he is the grand persecutor, as well as the
deceiver and accuser, of the brethren; men are his willing spiteful instruments,
but he is the chief adversary that wars against Christ and his people, Genesis
3:15; Revelation 12:12.
2. The design of Satan in raising persecutions against the faithful servants of
God is to bring them to apostasy, by reason of their sufferings, and so to
destroy their souls.
3. Sobriety and watchfulness are necessary virtues at all times, but especially
in times of suffering and persecution. "You must moderate your affection to
worldly things, or else Satan will soon overcome you."
4. "If you would overcome Satan, as a tempter, an accuser, or a persecutor, you
must resist him stedfast in the faith; if your faith give way, you are gone;
therefore, above all, take the shield of faith," Ephesians 6:16.
5. The consideration of what others suffer is proper to encourage us to bear our
own share in any affliction: The same afflictions are accomplished in your
brethren.

The Spirit always acts in harmony with the written Word of God.
It should be quoted in times of temptation and it will cut in pieces the snares
of the enemy.

Ephesians 6:17
Take the helmet of salvation - Or, as it is expressed, 1 Thessalonians 5:8, And
for a helmet, the hope of salvation.
It has already been observed, in the description of the Grecian armor, that on
the crest and other parts of the helmet were a great variety of emblematical
figures, and that it is very likely the apostle refers to helmets which had on
them an emblematical representation of hope; viz. that the person should be safe
who wore it, that he should be prosperous in all his engagements, and ever
escape safe from battle.
So the hope of conquering every adversary and surmounting every difficulty,
through the blood of the Lamb, is as a helmet that protects the head; an
impenetrable one, that the blow of the battle-axe cannot cleave.
The hope of continual safety and protection, built on the promises of God, to
which the upright follower of Christ feels he has a Divine right, protects the
understanding from being darkened, and the judgment from being confused by any
temptations of Satan, or subtle arguments of the sophistical ungodly.
He who carries Christ in his heart cannot be cheated out of the hope of his
heaven,
The sword of the Spirit - See what is said before on ξιφος and μαχαιρα, in the
account of the Greek armor (Ephesians 6:13 (note)).
The sword of which St. Paul speaks is, as he explains it, the word of God; that
is, the revelation which God has given of himself, or what we call the Holy
Scriptures.
This is called the sword of the
Spirit, because it comes from the Holy Spirit, and receives its fulfillment in
the soul through the operation of the Holy Spirit.
An ability to quote this on proper occasions, and especially in times of
temptation and trial, has a wonderful tendency to cut in pieces the snares of
the adversary.
In God's word a genuine Christian may have unlimited confidence, and to every
purpose to which it is applicable it may be brought with the greatest effect.
The shield, faith, and the sword - the word of God, or faith in God's
unchangeable word, are the principal armor of the soul.
He in whom the word of God dwells richly, and who has that faith by which he
knows that he has redemption, even the forgiveness of sins, need not fear the
power of any adversary.
He stands fast in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made him free.
Some suppose that του Πνευματος, of the Spirit, should be understood of our own
spirit or soul; the word of God being the proper sword of the soul, or that
offensive weapon the only one which the soul uses.
But though it is true that every Christian soul has this for its sword, yet the
first meaning is the most likely.

Jesus overcame Satan’s temptation with
the sword of the Spirit, the Word of God (Ephesians 6:17). Jesus had just
received a word from His Father that He was God’s Son (Luke 3:22). He refused to
move into doubt and do something in the natural to confirm that Word. His Father
had spoken, and that was sufficient.
Anything that Jesus would have said would have been equal to anything He had
previously said in Scripture, so why did He quote Old Testament scripture
instead of speaking a new scripture? It’s because the things already said in
Scripture could not be improved upon (see my note at Revelation 19:15). This
gives me great confidence that what the Lord has revealed to us in Scripture is
sufficient for whatever situation we encounter (2 Timothy 3:16). If Jesus saw no
need for any other weapon besides the written Word of God, then certainly that
is good enough for me.

Satan is a personality, as shown by the use of a personal pronoun in reference
to him. Satan is not a personification of all that is evil or bad, as some
teach. Satan and his demons are real, but they have been overcome by Jesus
(Ephesians 1:20-22). And Jesus has given His followers authority over all of
Satan’s power (Matthew 10:1; Mark 16:17; Luke 9:1, and 10:18-20). The name Satan
is a proper name for the devil (Matthew 4:10 and Revelation 12:9, see note 2 at
Luke 10:18).

This was Jesus speaking (Isaiah 49:1). This is referring to the Word of God
(John 1:1 and 14) being like a sharp sword. That certainly applies (Ephesians
6:17 and Hebrews 4:12). If Jesus was likened to an arrow, then God the Father
hit the bull’s-eye with Jesus.
Praise the Lord for this verse.
God’s Word will make even the most unwise person wise if they will heed the
instruction.
The English word “simple” is translated from the Hebrew word p@thiy, which means
“silly (i.e. seducible)” (Strong’s Concordance).
A person who entertains God’s words will not be silly or seducible.
The Amplified Bible translation of this verse says,
"The unfolding of Your [glorious] words give light;
Their unfolding gives understanding to the simple (childlike)."
So, this could be denoting those who are uncomplicated or those not being choked
by the cares of this world, the deceitfulness of riches, and the lust of other
things (Mark 4:19).

Note 1
The cause that occasioned Paul’s rejoicing here was the holy living to which he
had exhorted the Thessalonians in the previous verses. The reason Paul could
rejoice was because the Thessalonians had received his message as it was “in
truth, the word of God.” It’s the reception of God’s Word that causes holiness
to come as a fruit. “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you
free” (John 8:32). God’s Word is truth (John 17:17).

It is the reception of God’s Word into our lives that provides the basis for
true Christianity. The phrase “the Word of God” is used forty-six times in
Scripture. It not only refers to written and spoken words from God but also to
Jesus Christ Himself, the incarnate Word (John 1:14). The Word is also a
superhuman power that effectively works in those who believe (Hebrews 4:12).
The primary way God speaks to us and releases His power in the world today is
through His Word, which has been organized into the Bible. It is through God’s
Word that we come to know Him (1 Samuel 3:21 and John 8:31-32). God’s Word is
settled forever (Psalms 119:89); therefore, it’s always relevant. It never
changes. God’s Word is the standard by which all will be judged (John 12:48).
God’s Word always accomplishes its purpose (Isaiah 55:11). We are cleansed
through God’s Word (John 15:3), and everything that pertains to life and
godliness comes to us through His Word (2 Peter 1:3). We become partakers of
God’s divine nature through His Word and escape the corruption of this world (2
Peter 1:4).
There is no success in the Christian life without being deeply rooted in God’s
Word (Mark 4:14-20).

There is a difference between the word of man and the Word of God. God’s Word is
infinitely superior in every way. Any attempt to elevate man’s words to the same
level as God’s always results in devaluing God’s Word. Jesus told the people of
His day that they were “making the word of God of none effect through [their]
tradition” (Mark 7:13, brackets mine). The traditions and teachings of man are
not worthy to be compared to the Word of God.

Paul preached the same Gospel everywhere he went, but it didn’t always produce
the same results. It wasn’t because the message was different; it was the way
people received it that made the difference. These Thessalonians received Paul’s
message as the Word of God. Therefore, it produced life in them.
Even though ministers are responsible for how they minister, we also are
responsible for how we hear. Jesus was the perfect minister, yet most of the
people of His day rejected Him and His message. They didn’t have ears to hear or
hearts to receive. It’s imperative that we keep pure and sensitive hearts to God
so that when we hear the truth, we will receive it as it is in truth–the Word of
God.
God’s Word only releases its life-giving power when we mix it with faith in our
hearts (Hebrews 4:2).

This sharp sword is the Word of God
(Ephesians 6:17). Jesus will speak Scripture out of His mouth and slay all His

What a powerful truth. Anything the Lord would say would be equal to Scripture,
but He won’t say anything new.
That’s because the written Word that we have is as good as it gets.
He doesn’t need to say anything that isn’t already recorded in Scripture.

The child that was born to the woman in Revelation 12:1-2 was to rule the

There is a perpetual struggle against Satan and his kingdom from which there are
no “leaves” or “discharges.”
The Enemy goes about as a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour (1 Peter
5:8).
Those who resist the devil will see him flee (James 4:7).
The only ones whom he devours are those who don’t actively fight against him.
The kingdom of heaven is under attack (Matthew 11:12), and only those who become
militant in their resolve will enjoy the spoils that are ours through Christ

a [but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds] Four great conquests of spiritual weapons:
1. Destruction of strong holds -- We destroy reasonings of pagan philosophers and Jewish rabbis and their dogmas that nullify the Word of God and the facts of the Gospel. These fortifications we pull down and demolish. We put to flight the demon powers and alien armies, raising the banner of the cross high on the field of battle (2Cor. 10:4).
2. Casting down imaginations -- We demolish all theories, reasonings, and any high system of ethics, religion, mythology, metaphysics, sublime doctrines or philosophy set forth to defy the knowledge of God (2Cor. 10:5). All the boasted gods, lords, sacrificial and mediatorial systems fell before the Gospel. The high-sounding phrases of Plato, Aristotle, the Stoics, and even Judaism fell before the preaching of the crucified and risen Christ. Heathenism shrank before the Gospel and called on secular powers to defend it.
3. Bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ -- We take every thought prisoner and lead it into captivity to obey Christ (2Cor. 10:5). Lascivious, vain and evil thoughts of all kinds are brought down and made obedient to His laws. That includes any thinking which is contrary to virtue, purity and righteousness. See Mt. 15:19; Mk. 7:21-22; 1Cor. 13:5; Gal. 5:19; Php. 4:8; Gen. 6:5; Prov. 15:26; Isa. 55:7; 59:7; Jer. 4:14.
4. Having in readiness to avenge all disobedience -- We stand at all times ready, so to speak, to court-martial any opposing the Gospel of Christ, after separating ourselves from them (2Cor. 10:6). The whole picture here is that of a strong fortified city where the enemy makes his last stand; entrenching himself about the walls; raising towers and preparing engines of defense and offense upon the walls to insure victory. The fortifications, walls, towers, and castles are taken by the Gospel and the whole opposition is destroyed and taken captive.

The same Greek word, LOGISMOS, that was
translated “imaginations” here was translated “thoughts” in Romans 2:15 –
“Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also
bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one

Rienecker’s Linguistic Key to the Greek New Testament says that this word means
“calculation, reasoning, reflection, thought.”
Therefore, I think we can use this verse to say that the imagination is the part
of us that calculates, reasons, reflects, and thinks.
In Isaiah 26:3, the Hebrew word YETSER, which was translated “mind” there, means
“conception (i.e. purpose)” (Strong’s Concordance).
Imagination is the part of the mind where we conceive things.
And we have to have our imaginations stayed on the Lord to stay in perfect peace
Isaiah 26:3.
This scripture clearly links our peace to keeping our minds stayed on and
trusting in God.
This reveals that our emotions follow our thoughts. This is a major point that
“modern psychology” misses.
They say that emotions are a result of circumstances.
If that were so, then everyone who has experienced the same negative
circumstances would have the same negative emotions.
But that’s not true.
Siblings, even identical twins with the same genes and same environment, respond
differently to the same situations.
The way we think about what happens to us and the way we process our
environments are what make us react the way we do.
There isn’t anything wrong with the emotions of those who are depressed; there
is something wrong with their focus (Psalm 23:6).
If we think on depressing things, we will be depressed.
The answer to our lack of peace isn’t a pill or the removal of our problems.
The only sure way to walk in God’s perfect peace is to keep our minds stayed on
Him.
The Hebrew word YETSER, which was translated “mind” here, means “conception
(i.e. purpose)” (Strong’s Concordance).
It was translated “imagination” four times (Genesis 6:5, 8:21; Deuteronomy
31:21; and 1 Chronicles 29:18) and “imaginations” once (1 Chronicles 28:9).
This is stating that the imagination is a part of the mind and that it’s the
part that conceives things.
It’s like the womb of the mind.
Hope is a part of the imagination Romans 8:24.
The Lord keeps in perfect peace those who have their imaginations stayed on Him.
We have to have our minds focused on the Lord to the degree that we start
walking by faith and not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7).

We meditate in God’s Word by using our imaginations Psalm 1:2.
The English word stay is defined as “To continue to be in a place or condition”
(American Heritage Dictionary).
Our minds have to continue to be in a fixed place and condition for this perfect
peace to come.
The word “imaginations” is used two times in the New Testament (Romans 1:21 and
this verse).
The word “imagination” is used once (Luke 1:51).
And the word “imagine” is used once (Acts 4:25).
All of these references to the imagination are negative.
I believe a positive imagination is what the Bible calls hope Romans 8:24.

a [I am the living bread] The fourth and last time in this chapter Christ claims
to be the bread of life (Jn. 6:35,41,48,51). This bread is His flesh which He
gave for the life of the world (Jn. 6:33,51). Conditions must be met by the
world in order to get this life. See note, Jn. 6:27.
b [living] Greek: zao (GSN-<G2198>), live, be alive. He is the life-producing
bread (Jn. 6:48,51).
c [if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever] This is one of a number
of conditions one must meet to have everlasting life. See note, Jn. 6:27.
d [eat of this bread] Eating of Christ simply means that man must accept by
faith what Christ did for him and live by obedience to Him without sin so the
penalty will not have to be paid again. See note, Jn. 6:63.

Of course, Jesus was speaking in a spiritual sense. He was not talking of
cannibalism, but these Jews took it that way. Also, He was not speaking of
living forever in this corrupted body. But our born-again spirits John 3:3 will
never die (Revelation 20:6, 14; and 21:8).
A man or woman without the new birth is spiritually blind. This parallels what
Paul said in 1 Corinthians 2:14, “But the natural man receiveth not the things
of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know
them, because they are spiritually discerned.”
The Greek word ANOTHEN, which was translated “again” here, means “from above; by
analogy, from the first; by implication, anew” (Strong’s Concordance). This is
stressing a spiritual birth from above as compared to the physical birth
everyone on the earth experiences. See my note at John 3:7.
Note 2
The new birth is essential for entering into the kingdom of God (John 3:5). As
Jesus explained to Nicodemus, this is not a second physical birth but rather a
spiritual birth. Our spiritual man became dead unto (separated from) God through
sin (Romans 3:23, 6:23, 7:9, 11; Ephesians 2:1, and 5). Just as we didn’t
accomplish our physical births, we cannot produce this spiritual rebirth. We are
totally incapable of saving ourselves (Jeremiah 13:23; Romans 3:10-12, 8:7-8;
and Ephesians 2:3); therefore, we need a Savior (Titus 1:4; 2:13; 3:4, and 6).
We simply believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and we are saved (Acts 16:31). Faith
is the only condition (Romans 3:28 and 10:6-9). Faith alone saves; however,
saving faith is never alone. As stated in James 2:17-18, “faith, if it hath not
works, is dead, being alone...shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will
shew thee my faith by my works.” Salvation is not a reformation but rather a
regeneration, a new birth, a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17), that can only be
accomplished by a creative miracle of the Holy Spirit (John 1:13 and 3:5).

Throughout Jesus’ earthly ministry, the Jews kept looking for Him to establish a
physical kingdom here on the earth and deliver them from the oppression of the
Romans (Daniel 7:13-14, 27; Luke 17:20; and Acts 1:6). Although at Jesus’ Second
Coming, the kingdom of God will physically rule over the nations of the earth
(Matthew 25:31-46; Revelation 11:15, and 20:4), Jesus’ kingdom is spiritually
established by His Word and not carnal weapons (2 Corinthians 10:3-5). Jesus
said, “The kingdom of God cometh not with observation...behold, the kingdom of
God is within you” (Luke 17:20-21). Paul said we are already in the kingdom of
God (Colossians 1:13). The kingdom of God is therefore Christ’s “invisible
church,” His body; it was begun during His earthly ministry and is still ruling
the hearts of people today. To be a part of His church (Romans 12:5 and
Ephesians 1:22-23), you must be born again.
Notice that we are supposed to follow
the faith of them who rule over us.
This isn’t speaking of blind obedience; it’s speaking of following leadership as
long as that leadership is leading us in godly ways (1 Corinthians 11:1).
Some Christians today don’t acknowledge any rule over them.
That is out of order. Everyone should have other believers to whom they are
accountable.
That can be abused, but when used in a proper way, accountability to others is a
good thing.
No one is the total manifestation of Jesus.
We are just members of His body (Ephesians 4:15-16) and have to be connected to
that body to function as He intends.

Note 2
This parable is illustrating the importance of the Word of God.
God’s Word contains total power (Psalms 138:2 and Hebrews 1:3), but it has to be
planted in our hearts and allowed to germinate before it releases that power.
The seed is God’s Word, and the types of ground are the four major categories of
people’s hearts (“sown in his heart” - Matthew 13:19, also see Mark 4:15).
The Word was the same in each situation (an incorruptible seed - 1 Peter 1:23),
but there were different results in each case because of the condition of
people’s hearts, not because of the Word.
The Word doesn’t work for everyone, because not everyone will allow the Word to
work.
The variable in this parable is the condition of these hearts.
God’s Word is always the same. It has the same potential in every heart.

Notes For Verse 16
a [Repent; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will fight against them
with the sword of my mouth]
The 5th prophecy in Revelation (Rev. 2:16-17; Rev. 2:16, fulfilled; Rev. 2:17,
unfulfilled). Next, Rev. 2:22.
Repentance is required of all backsliders (Rev. 2:5,16,21,22; 3:3,19).
That there is a possibility of backsliders not repenting is clear from the fact
that if they did not repent, they would be judged.

Notice that the Lord wasn’t going to fight against this pastor.
The Lord would fight against those who held the doctrine of the Nicolaitans.
The Lord is saying, “You judge them or I will.”
If pastors truly love their people, they will deal with their sins (Leviticus
19:17) not in a condemning way but in a helpful way–the Lord corrects like godly
parents correct their child.1 Corinthians 5:12-13.
How would the Lord fight against these people?
It was with the sword of His mouth, which is the Word of God (Ephesians 6:17).
The Lord corrects us with His Word (2 Timothy 3:16-17 and Hebrews 12:6-8).

His own will, begat us through the truth of His Word (1 Peter 1:23).

Paul didn’t just minister to the outward man or the intellect of man. He spoke
to them on a heart level. He depended on the Holy Spirit to bear witness with
their consciences that what he was saying was true.
Billy Graham made the comment that it was a major turning point in his ministry
when he quit trying to be the Holy Spirit and bring conviction to men. Instead,
he just spoke the truth and let the Holy Spirit do the convicting.
Note 2
Paul was revealing his personal standard of integrity. There was no deceit, no
dishonesty on his part. He was totally transparent in his ministry, depending on
the Holy Spirit to produce the right results, instead of his own craftiness.
In Colossians 3:9-10, Paul linked ceasing from lying with knowing one’s own
identity in Christ and being renewed in knowledge. Those who are trusting in
Christ cannot trust in lies at the same time. Dishonest people are desperate
people who are operating in fear instead of faith. Usually this fear comes
because they do not have clear consciences and they must use deceit to cover
their deeds.
Paul showed his great faith in the Lord and his absolute security in Christ by
refusing to use any type of manipulation. It is a sign of great faith and
maturity in the Lord when ministers let the Holy Spirit be the one who does the
convicting.
Note 3
Paul proclaimed that his conscience was clear as he walked before people and in
the sight of God. He had never adulterated the Gospel, nor had he used
underhanded means to deceive. Paul’s method of ministry was open and righteous
because he served others as one walking in the presence of God.
On the contrary, false teachers conceal their hidden lives of dishonesty and
shame. Their methods of ministry use trickery and craftiness to ensnare their
unsuspecting victims by adulterating the Word of God. This seems to be the
meaning of the words and phrases from the Greek that Paul used in this verse.
Paul mentioned three things in this verse that characterize false prophets and
teachers. First, they are dishonest. The Greek word translated “dishonesty”
implies hidden, concealed, and secret things that bring shame or disgrace.
Second, false ministers use craftiness (Ephesians 4:14). Craftiness carries the
idea of being underhanded, deceptive, shrewd, and cunning. This same Greek word
was used to describe the serpent’s subtlety in beguiling Eve (2 Corinthians
11:3).
Third, they handle God’s Word deceitfully. This would involve those that
distort, tamper with, adulterate, or falsify God’s Word.
False prophets and teachers are deceived because of their lack of love for the
truth (2 Thessalonians 2:10-12 and Ezekiel 14:7-9). They devour souls, oppress,
and defraud (Ezekiel 22:25); they may preach about Christ out of contention, a
factious spirit, or for their own ends, but not sincerely (Philippians 1:16).
They will appear to be very religious and may come as “an angel of light” (2
Corinthians 11:13-14).
They may come undetected in sheep’s clothing (Matthew 7:15) and prey upon God’s
flock instead of feeding them (Ezekiel 34:2). They will quickly forsake the
sheep in times of trouble (John 10:12). They will teach things for filthy
lucre’s sake (Titus 1:11) and be covetous and greedy for gain (Micah 3:11).
They claim to be commissioned and sent by God (Jeremiah 23:21), but their lies
cause God’s people to err (Jeremiah 23:32 and Revelation 2:20).
These false teachers are faithless (Zephaniah 3:4) and many times given to
immorality (Jeremiah 23:11, 14; and 2 Peter 2:14). “Many shall follow their
pernicious ways” (2 Peter 2:2) and come to great harm. Because of these false
prophets’ greed, they “will tell you anything to get hold of your money” (2
Peter 2:3, The Living Bible).
hey have forsaken the right way and are gone astray (2 Peter 2:15). They profess
that they know God, but in works, they deny Him (Titus 1:16). They turn the
grace of God into lasciviousness, saying, “We can do just as we like” (Jude 4,
LB).
Notes For Verse 17
a [corrupt] Greek: kapeleuo (GSN-<G2585>), adulterate. Only here, but the word
kapelos occurs in the Septuagint in Isa. 1:22 of tavern keepers who mix wine
with water. The idea here is that the false apostles who were disturbing the
Corinthians (2Cor. 11:13-15) were mixing the Word of God with their own
inventions and were explaining it away to accommodate their hearers to get gain.
Much of the Word of God is being adulterated today in many parts of Christendom
(2Tim. 4:1-4).
b [sincerity] Sincerity here refers to keeping the Word of God pure, and to
delivering it in its purity to mankind.

Note 9
Paul was speaking about his sincerity and purity in proclaiming the Word of God.
He was not as many false teachers who corrupted the Word of God, but rather he
was as from God, commissioned, commanded, and sent. He stood in God’s sight as
one who spoke from his union with Christ.
In Greek usage, the word “KAPELEUO” (“corrupt”) denotes the selling of teaching
for money, the merchandising of God’s Word for sordid gain (Acts 8:20 and
20:33). What Paul called the corrupting of God’s Word was the offering of the
Word of God for money, the selling of it, peddling it, and retailing it. This is
distinctly different from the principle of receiving gifts as a result of having
sown spiritual things (1 Corinthians 9:11 and 13-14).
This verse may be translated as follows: “Unlike so many, we do not peddle the
word of God for profit. On the contrary, we proclaim the gospel under God’s
direction, as messengers sent by him and as servants of Christ” (“A Translator’s
Guide to Paul’s Second Letter to the Corinthians” by Robert G. Bratcher).

a [But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for
the meek of the earth] Two things the Messiah will do:
1. He will judge righteous judgment.
2. He will administer impartial justice.

This happened in part at the first coming of Jesus the Messiah, it appears that
the total fulfillment of this verse is in Revelation 19:15 and 21.
As mentioned Isaiah 61:2, the first and second comings of Jesus were often
combined in Isaiah’s prophecies.
However, the New Testament clearly reveals that the first advent was for
salvation, while Jesus’ second coming will be to execute judgment.
The things described in Isaiah 11:6-9 bear out that this is speaking of the end
times as described in the book of Revelation.
